THE CITY

Coruñas strategic situation on the far west corner of Spain at the entrance to the Ártabro Gulf, bathed by the waters of the mighty Atlantic Ocean, mixes its air of modern metropolis with the ancient roman roots of its foundation. Today, La Coruña combines the tranquility of its Old Quarter with the hustle and bustle of the port area and El Ensanche, the heart of the modern town. Friendly, liberal, modern, entertaining and full of history, La Coruña stores a personality which clearly singles it out from other cities of similar size. The sea has been responsible for marking the different cycles and historic rhythms of this city and there is no doubt the sea is its most outstanding feature. La Coruña also offers it s visitor an attractive urban design. Among the local sights, special mention should be made of the Tower of Hercules, the only Roman lighthouse in existence that is still in use and the best and most eloquent witness of the Roman time, the Church of Santa María, the Castle of San Antón (housing the Archeological Museum) and the more recent buildings of the Galerías de la Marina (19th century). The city can boast with an intense cultural activity with a dozen halls, showing art paintings, sculptures, antiquities, among one maybe is the flagship of the rest of them, the Kiosco Alfonso. Also the symphony Orchestra of La Coruña and the season of big orchestras have the most ambitious programmes. The harbour of La Coruña, also known as the Muro, is considered the first in Europe in regard to the entry of fresh fish and fish and seafood are treated in a special manner in the restaurants here. In Coruña the visitor can enjoy a modern city with historic value, good food and closeness to the sea.

EXCURSIONS

El Camino Inglés: for pilgrims from the british islands and the North and the West of Europe this always was the shortest and most practical way to Santiago. It goes through La Coruña, o Burgo, Cambre, Ordes, and Sigüeiro (Oroso). The route ends after having passed the famous bridge of Tambre.

Route to Santiago de Compostela: second religious capital of Europe after Rome since the apostel Santiago has his tomb here. The two different quarters of the city are; the old town with its San Francisco convent, the university and the famous Plaza del Obradoiro etc. and the new part of the city with La Colegiata del Sar, el Monte Pedroso and the paseo de la Herradura.

A Costa da Morte: the scary name "the coast of the death" appears a big contrast to the ravishing beauty of its impressive landscapes with high cliffs and sea. The route goes through Caión, Buño, Malpica, Corme, Laxe, Vimianzo, Camariñas, Muxia, Touriñán, Corcubión and Finisterre.
