THE CITY

Granada is among the few cities in the world that may truly be called unique. It is a city of unsurpassable beauty with a history moulded by Islam rule. Granada has been a cultural crossroads and is an example of peaceful cohabitation between the many diverse cultures to which it has been the host. The treasures of the past have made it famous. Granada is full of warm monuments and pictoresque streets. Doubtless, its most precious jewel is the Alhambra. As the only surviving medieval Arab palace in the world, it is an expression of harmony and artistic excellence that cannot fail to impress and delight.

Special festivities of Granada is for example the Eastern Week, a week of passion, celebrated with religious feelings and floats in the streets. Light and colour strengten the joy of dance and song, the smell of roasted potatoes fill the air. In the summer there are evenings, celebrated at the Generalife ring with celestial music. Granadas International Music and Dance festival is also well known as a opportunity to listen to the good vibrations from between the columns of Carlos V palace and Patio de los Arrayanes for a few days. In Granadas city one can stroll around for example in the "Sacromonte district", the most rural, the whitest and the most Andalusian area of all Granada, in the "Generalife" with its gardens and forests, a peaceful spot, perfect for contemplation or in other magic places like the Corral del Carbón or the Palace of Dar al´Horra, that reminds the very ancient muslim past. The Gothic finds its main reference point in the Royal chapel with the tomb of the Catholic Monarchs and the Plateresque gate. The Renaissance is represented in the Cathedral and the San Jerónimo Monastery. The Cartuja monument has become the best piece of Baroque architecture of Granada.

THE CITY

Santander, "the ideal city", is a modern cosmopolitan city with a spectacular setting in the pure beauty of Nature. Made fashionable as a summer resort by the Spanish royalty, the city extends around the north shore of a large bay with many sandy stretches like Los Peligros, La Magdalena and el Camello. These beaches conserve a great natural reservation and the Bay is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. From the Bay, next to the Palacete (small palace) of the Pier the visitor can enjoy a spectacular city view and in Puertochico, where the Marina is situated, one will observe how the fishing tradition still remains a living part of Santander´s everyday life. In Paseo Pereda, the most emblematic street of Santander, the visitor finds buildings of great architectual beauty. Among the architecture is Sacred Christ´s church with the remains of the Sacred Martyrs, the Cathedral of Santander and the City Hall, situated in the City Centre. In Santander there are a lot of art exhibitions and monuments like the monument in the memory of José María de Pereda, Cantabrian writer and author of works as "Sotileza" and "Peñas Arriba". Futher Santander is the host of three important events, namely, the Memémdez Pelayo International Summer University, the international Festival of Music and Dance and the internationally enowned City of the Santander Piano Competition.

THE CITY

Toledo lying at the heart of Spain and a stone’s throw from Madrid, is a historic city where the past is palpably present in the myriad facets its townscape: winding streets, cobbled alleys, hidden corners, façades, courtyards and patios…. Herein lies Toledo’s utterly singular nature and the reason for its being declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. It is situated in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, close to Madrid (70 km) and Barajas international airport (80 km).

Imperial capital and city of three cultures, Toledo is a unique city, on the banks of the river Tajo (Tagus). The mark of Christian, Islamic and Jewish cultures, museum city immortalised by El Greco and the finest writers on Spanish literature. Site of the court of Alfonso X EL Sabio (the Wise) who, in his School of Translators (13th century) brought together the three cultures. In the XVI century it was the Imperial City of Charles V, who governed an intercontinental empire from the Toledan royal palace. Capital of tolerance and meeting point for East and West, it stood before the workd as a model of peaceful coexistence and succeeded in showing the universal character of culture and science. Nowadays Toledo is the capital of Castilla-La Mancha.

In Toledo, space has ages which sail between the arch and vault of the Roman world, the colour and shine of Visigoth gold and silver work, the aesthetic triumph of the Islamic brick and Mudejar plasterwork, the spirituality of the Gothic area, the classicism and harmony of Renaissance architecture, the sensual Baroque scenery, the erudite rationality of Neoclassicism, the new historicist language and functionalism of modern architectural lines.

Catalonia is a relatively small area over one thousand years of history, and a culture and language that have helped forge a character all of its own. The Catalans have always had an open-minded attitude to the outside world. They enjoy having foreign visitors amongst them and showing them around their region. Moreover, they like them to feel comfortable here, just as if they were at home. Perhaps, this is why, alongside its traditional charm, Catalonia manages to maintain a warm cordiality.

GIRONA FULL DAY CITY TOUR.

Visit this important medieval city, with the Call Jewish quarter, the Centre Bonastruc Sa Porta former Synagogue, the Arab baths, the gothic Cathedral, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants & a panoramic. Lunch in a local restaurant. Jews in Girona: In the 12th century, Jews moved to a lower part of the city. In 1160 they were already inhabiting the Call, the name given to Jewish quarters in Catalonia. It is a name coming from Latin callis (street), which would become carrer in Catalan and calle in Spanish. In medieval times, call meant a "group of narrow streets". These paved, narrow and labirynth streets constituted the urban space where most of the Jewish population in Girona settled in the 13th and 14th centuries. The community's main body was formed by tradesmen and craftsmen: tailors, shoemakers, weavers, barbers, furriers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths and silversmiths opened their workshops in the Call´s narrow streets. Others devoted their time to medicine and astrology, while those who had the means became money-lenders. In Girona there is The Bonastruc ça Porta Centre, located in the emblematic building that housed the last synagogue of Girona, is currently the home of the Museum of the History of the Jews and the Nahmanides Institute for Jewish studies.

N A V A R R A

Since time, history and chance have conspired to make it an obligatory staging post and gateway to Europe. At any time of year, whether amidst the heights of the pyrenees mountain valleys, the disquieting desert of Las Bardenas, the rich monumental heritage lining the pilgrims’ way to Santiago,or the attractions of Pamplona, the visitor, -in touch with nature, far from noise and crowds, and with a comprehensive range of leisure and recreational activities to choose from- can neverthless enjoy the comfort of readily availanle services, all of which will inevitably make a trip to Navarre an experience to be repeated.

P A M P L O NA

THE CITY

With two University campuses and one of the most prestigious healthcare complexes in Europe, Pamplona enjoys a top-quality lifestyle, enhanced by its many parks and gardens, and the historic walled Old Quarter, eloquent testimony to the city’s past.

The Plaza del Castillo, the central square that is the heart of Pamplona, leads onto an Old Part with excellent examples of buildings that witness the city’s cultural and historical development. Religious jewels, such as the Cathedral with its beatiful cloister or the churches of San Cernin or San Nicolás, and civil buildings, noble houses converted into apartments or government offices, such as those to be found in Calle Zapatería, stand on busy streets full of shops and bars catering for all tastes

A good way to get know the Old Part is to follow the route of the Encierro (Bull Run) from Santo Domingo to the Bullring via the City Hall Square and along Mercaderes and Estafeta. You don’t have to go far either to find peaceful parks: El Redín, Ciudadela, La Taconera and La Media Luna are nearest to the centre, but also worth a visit are the Japanese garden in Yamaguchi Park (near the Planetarium) or the University campuses.

Pamplona, the old Iruña (the basque name for the city) has traditionally been the heart of the basin to wich it gives its name.
