DAY TIME FIESTAS

Fiesta Mayor: During the Day: Every Catalan town and village holds its fiesta mayor, or local annual festival, to commemorate its patron saint’s day. The characteristic elements of this ritual (after the religious ceremony) put the focus on entertainment. They include many activities ranging from dancing sardanas ( the traditional dance in Catalonia) to a variety of competitions, as well as the typical festival meals.

The Calçotada: Originally a fiesta restricted to the winter months and held in the region of Tarragona. The Calçotada is a party where the Calçots are eaten. They are small tasty spring onions, cooked on a barbecue, which are served with romesco, a typical sauce made from almonds, peppers and olive oil. The party can be complemented with a number of events related to folklore, such as an exhibition by "castellers" or human towers, a parade of "gegants", people dressed up as giants, or dancing of "sardanas", the Catalan national dance.

Fiesta Mayor: at Night: as night falls, the local festival becomes a feast for the senses. Night time is usually devoted to dancing and the celebration of fire, according to a Mediterranean ritual dating back over a thousand years. Fiesta Mayor also means the "correfoc" procession; an ancient tradition featuring devils, gunpowder and firecrackers which turn the night into a festival of sound and light.

The Verbena: the Verbena holds a place in the memory and sentimental education of the majority of Catalans. It the fiesta of the summer solstice: a celebration dominated by joy, fire and initiation into adult life. The festivals of Sant Joan, Sant Pere and Sant Jaume are the traditional ones.

Very near to Barcelona the Penedés, the home of "cava"; Tarragona, the Roman city; land of adventure; or the Costa Brava, blue, green, sunny, shimmering and bearing the hallmark of the Greeks, Romans, Jews and …the genius of Dalí.

Visit to Wine/Cava cellar and Wine/Cava tasting: Just a few kilometres of the city is the Penedés, a wine producing area with a long-standing tradition. Its most widely distributed product is "cava", the Catalan version of champagne, and a drink associated with festivities and happiness. The whole of the Penedés id one bug vineyard, lovingly tended by generations of cellarmen who have brought the "cava", to exquisite levels.

Montserrat: It is the holy mountain of Catalonia. This is a peculiar rocky outcrop, smoothed into the millenniums. A Benedictine monastery stands on the mountainside which is the guide to Catalan spiritual life, and also a homage to the Virgin of Montserrat (La Moreneta), the patroness of Catalonia. It has one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe. Here you can find the San Joan funicular: it travels from the Pla de les taràntules to the Sant Miquel and Sant Joan hermitage; this route the chance to get to know the mountain and take some excellent photos of the Monastery and its surroundings.

Sitges: Sitges is a white town overlooking a blue sea. Sitges, a town with its own keenly defined personality, brings together a wide range of attractions. The attractions of Costa Brava are manifold, and guarantee an unforgettable visit. A particularly outstanding example of these is the world of the painter Salvador Dalí who was born in Figueres. Jews in Girona: In the 12th century, Jews moved to a lower part of the city. In 1160 they were already inhabiting the Call, the name given to Jewish quarters in Catalonia. It is a name coming from Latin callis (street), which would become carrer in Catalan and calle in Spanish. In medieval times, call meant a "group of narrow streets". These paved, narrow and labirynth streets constituted the urban space where most of the Jewish population in Girona settled in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The community's main body was formed by tradesmen and craftsmen: tailors, shoemakers, weavers, barbers, furriers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths and silversmiths opened their workshops in the Call´s narrow streets. Others devoted their time to medicine and astrology, while those who had the means became money-lenders.
