SAN SEBASTIÁN THE CITY ![]() San Sebastián, situated in the centre of the Basque Country, is the capital of the province of Gipuzkoa with three beaches opening out onto the sea. The city is superbly locatedat the mouth of the Río Uremea and around the beautiful Bahía de la Concha. There are splendid views from both hills, but the best is from the top of Monte Igueldo to which there is a funicular railway. At the foot of the other wooded mound, Monte Urgull, are the harbour and crowded older part –centre of evening activity whith buzzes in the narrow streets, bars and eating places. The best historical treasure in the city is the Museo de San Telmo, formerly a 16C convent. San Sebastián is the home of 180.000 residents. It is a cosmopolitan city with a long history of tourism and irradiates a special tranquility that turnes it into a particulary relaxing place for visitors. It enjoys a temperate climate with mild winters and pleasant summers. Average temperatur is 22ºC. THE PROVINCE The province of Gipuzkoa is located on the Bay of Biscay in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula with its borders with France. The economic livelihood in this district depends very much on metallurgy, cement industry and on fishing. The 86 km of costline is lined with eroded sea cliffs, long streches of beach and traditional seaports. Here in Gipuzkoa regional folkloric traditions as well as the local language Euskera live on. The Urola Coast Region combines urban beaches with fishing ports. The Lower Deba river Region includes industrial towns and in the Upper Deba River Region the most outstaning towns in terms of monuments; convents, churches etc. are to be found. EXCURSIONS & TOURS: A tour of the city: Take a bus along "la Concha" Bay to Ondarreta beach and from here a funicular railway ride up to Mount Igueldo with a spectacular view of the city. Visit Miramar palace, the Anoeta Sports Complex and the avant-garde Kursaal Conference. Go for a walking tour in the narrow streets of San Sebastiáns Old Town and choose between a visit, among others, to San Telmo Museum, San Vincente Church, the Naval Museum or Ayete Palace with extensive gardens. Urola coast: Half a day tour to Zarautz, traditionall summer resort with a beautiful Old Town a Photomuseum and a nice seaside promenade. Then the tour goes to fishing port Getaria and later to Zumaia, where Ignacio de Zuloaga family house and museum is situated. Trip to the French Basque country: The tour leaves San Sebastián and takes you to Saint Jean de Luz with a port and a nice old shoppingstreet. Some of the most important artists of the secind half of this century like Eduardo Chillida, Yves Klein and Robert Rauschenberg are represented here. Trips around Gipuzkoa: The tour goes along the coastal road to Getaria and its lovely fishing port. A little further in Zumaia you can visit the Ignacio de Zuloaga painter´s museum and afterwards in Azpeitia the Basilica and the house where Saint Ignatius Loyola was born. Return to San Sebastián through the Valley of Regil. Excursion along the Bidasoa coast: The tour goes to Pasajes de San Juan, where you find Gipuzkoa´s loading port. Later on the tour, in the fishing town, Hondarribia, you can walk in the old town and try fresh fish in the "Marina" neighbourhood. Return along the coastal road and have spectacular views of the valley from Mount Jaizkibel. Excursion to the interior area: On a trip to the interior around Goierri you come to see the the green country side, the mountainous peaks of the Aizkorri (1,550 m) and the Aralar mountain ranges. In Goierri you can see the Beasain´s 15th century palace and a visit to the small villages Segura and Zerain, with its Ethnographical Museum about Basque lifestile, also are a must on this tour.
